Matera is located in southern Italy, in one of the most beautiful and authentic Italian region Basilicata. Matera recently is even more accessible to the Bulgarians after they were released and direct flights to Bari. The most pleasant travel to the city from there with car rental.
The name of the town means "my land" and has an ancient origin. Its oldest neighborhoods, called Sassi di Matera Sassi-stones, were declared by UNESCO World Heritage site.

As you go up and look down the stone town seems at first glance like a ghetto. After a few seconds, however, the unique place begins to reveal her magic. In fact, before his announcement for the world heritage site, though several decades Matera was deserted. The natural caves in the Sassi di Matera are d″lbani in soft rocks and dooformâni as homes. The neighborhood is a maze with dark green doors and painted in the same colour wooden Windows. One of the most interesting places is the Rock Church, and fabulous views of the city. Before you enter into it however, visit Sasa-typical must cave Grotta. It is a carved rock in which ever lived the whole family, alongside the donkey or the pig. The mother and father were sleeping on high beds with metal frame, and her children – or in a drawer of the dresser.
