Wisteria Tunnel – located in Kawachi Fuji Gardens, Kitakyushu, Japan. Its sophisticated beauty and delicate accuracy immediately reveals its origins to those familiar with old-style Japanese gardening. Flowering trees hang overhead and the different colored rows spatter the garden. A participant of the pea family, wisteria is a decorative vine with around 10 different classes, wildly famous in both Eastern and Western gardens for its elegant hanging flowers and its decorative, winding branches. Easily trained, the wooded vines reach maturity within a few years for certain species, or up to 20 for others. Once maturity is touched, the reward is waterfalls of long, lavender raceme blooms of changing pastel shades creating a natural chandelier of color and beauty.
The Wisteria Tunnel, which is portion of a breathtaking display of botanical pleasures that include zen gardens and a cherry blossom festival, is located at the Kawachi Fuji Gardens in Kitakyushu. Different types and colors of wisteria have been interlaced through a cylindrical lattice that during the blooming months of April through May, become a fantastical flower wrapped tunnel during the yearly “Wisteria Festival” which is also known as “Fuji Matsuri“.
